Many Americans Battle Vertigo At times, Singer Jordin Sparks has gone several days without a proper night's sleep after she has been struck down with crippling bouts of vertigo. Ironically, Jordin Sparks has a song called Vertigo (2009) as well, about how love is making her dizzy. But, now she is struggling with the actual debilitating condition. In a post on Twitter.com, she writes, "I have not had a solid sleep session for 4 days. I have a serious case of vertigo. Dizzy when I'm up & dizzy when I'm laying down." Sparks is one of millions of Americans who struggle with vestibular disorders like vertigo. The medical treatment of vertigo involves dozens of over-the-counter and prescription medications, most of which at best control symptoms. But, as with all medications do not address the underlying cause. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download our e-book below. Head and Neck Trauma and Vertigo
Many people who suffer with vestibular disorders like vertigo, dizziness, disequilibrium and others have a history of head and neck trauma. Some of the most hopeful research for vertigo sufferers has come out in the past 5 years. Dr. Michael Burcon has investigated the effects of upper cervical specific chiropractic management of patients medically diagnosed with vertigo. In one of his studies looking at upper cervical specific chiropractic care and vertigo, one hundred and thirty-six out of the one hundred and thirty-nine patients presented with an absence or dramatic reduction of symptoms, especially vertigo...that's 97%! After two years, on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 representing the absence of the symptom and 10 being the worst imaginable, vertigo was lowered from an average of 8.5 to 1.4. Prior to the onset of symptoms, all one hundred and thirty nine cases suffered cervical traumas; most from automobile accidents, resulting in previously undiagnosed whiplash injuries. If Jordin Sparks or others struggling with vertigo have a history of head or neck trauma, an upper neck evaluation is extremely important. This type of evaluation can only be performed by an upper cervical specialist to determine if the underlying damage to the upper neck is likely leading to these problems.

Whiplash on the Ears Two million people are exposed to whiplash injury (related to an auto accident) in the U.S. every year. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth or side-to-side beyond its normal limits, ligaments supporting the neck vertebrae can be sprained (over-stretched) or torn, forcing vertebrae out of their normal position. In tests of low speed rear impact collisions, it was reported that the neck can be injured even in slow speeds accidents as low as 5 mph. Most rear impact accidents occur at crash speeds of 6 to 12 mph - speeds below the threshold for property damage to the vehicle - but sufficient to cause neck injury. Whiplash injuries to the cervical spine can occur in sports (skiing, hockey, football, cycling, ice skating, gymnastics, boxing), during falls (down a flight of stairs, on an icy sidewalk), and many more! German researchers Dr. Kaeser and Dr. Ettlin have found that a whiplash injury can lead to a variety of problems including dizziness, speech problems, throat problems and hearing loss. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download are e-book below. In the conclusion of the research article, these German medical doctors say that whiplash symptoms often respond to upper neck adjustments.
How We can Help If a person (infant, child, or adult) experiences an accident, a proper spinal exam is necessary to assess whether a neck injury occurred. An upper cervical chiropractic specialist uses specialized testing and specific x-rays of the upper neck to accurately assess a neck injury. If a neck injury is found, a specific adjustment is used to correct the injured vertebrae. Correction of the neck injury can improve, reverse, and prevent numerous whiplash symptoms. The Nerves from Your Brainstem Did you know the nerves in your upper neck, which is the lower part of the area where your brainstem is, extend up to your ears? That means when your upper neck is injured, those nerves can also be potentially injured. There's a neurological connection that can lead to Cochlear Hydrops, hearing loss, Tinnitus, Meniere's Disease, chronic ear infections, and possibly even Vertigo. Though, thanks to Dr. Michael Burton of Michigan, we know more about this connection now because of his research of that connection and the various diseases and conditions it can lead to. His research shows a connection between those conditions listed above and various others to whiplash. He also found that half of those injuries are caused by car accidents and the other half are caused by head trauma. Whiplash and Your Skull According to his research whiplash causes a misalignment in the base of the skulls and the top of the neck. That misalignment in the upper cervical part of the spine causes a lesion that affects the Eustachian Tube. He believes the correlation was previously not made due to the average 15 years between the time of the injury and the manifestation of the symptoms. Due to that length of time between the injury and the manifestation of those symptoms, people who suffer from those condition are usually in the middle ages. That means the injuries that led to the misalignment in their upper neck that caused their suffering could have been due to car accident, sports related injury, or other injury during their high school or college years. Those are the years when young people tend to think they are invincible, but their choices may come back to haunt them many years later. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download are e-book below. Your Vertigo and Your Medical History
One problem this causes is that because of the length of time between the injury and the manifestation of the symptoms, people will often not list those accidents. Though, since those poor choices in our 20's can come back to haunt us, it is vital to list those conditions, so the upper cervical chiropractor has all of the information they need. So, if you do suffer from any of those conditions listed above, there is a good chance it may be due to a misalignment to your upper cervical spine, due to an injury you sustained in your younger years. Did you play college sports, or were you just a daredevil? Your injury might be coming back to haunt you. Either way, it's important that you allow an upper cervical chiropractor to examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments. They'll be able to see if there are any misalignments to your upper cervical spine, and they'll make necessary adjustment so as to realign your spine. To find an upper cervical chiropractor in your area go to www.upcspine.com or if you are in the Boise Idaho area, just click the button to schedule an appointment. What is Tinnitus? If you've ever heard a constant beeping, chirping, clicking, or similar noise without a source, there is a good chance you are suffering from Tinnitus. You may think you are suffering alone, but the truth is you're not. One out of five people suffer from it, and the chances of you getting it increase with age. That means while 20% of all people suffer from this hearing condition, that percentage increases with age. What causes Tinnitus? Now that you know that that percentage increases with age, and that the older you are the more normal you are if you deal with it, you should also know it's not a disease. It's a sign of an underlying condition, but that underlying condition may be serious, so it's important that you not ignore those random sounds in your ear. There are three parts to your ear: the outer, middle, and inner ear. You guessed it! What we see and think of as the ear is the outer ear and is only one part of your ear. Each part of the ear plays a part in a person's ability to hear
Causes of Tinnitus
Most of the time, there are simple preventative measures a person can take to reduce or eliminate Tinnitus. Sometimes, it can be as easy as just cleaning out your ears or getting away from the construction zone or other area that's causing that ringing. Of course, if that random noise doesn't go away after you do one or both of those two things, then you'll want to seek the proper care. Frequently that will start with seeing an ear nose and throat specialist. But after a thorough evaluation if you are still having ringing in your ears the cause may be coming from a surprising source. Head and neck injuries can lead to very slight misalignments in the upper neck. This upper neck area where the brain and spinal cord come together is very sensitive to pressure and irritation. The nerves that your ears rely on in order to work properly begin in your upper neck at the level of the brainstem. Misalignments in that area have been demonstrated to cause ringing in the ears and other ear related symptoms. Dr. Grayson Blom is an expert at evaluating and correcting misalignments in the upper neck. As a specially trained upper cervical chiropractic specialist Dr. Blom has been able to help many people locate and correct their tinnitus and other ear related symptoms by making a specific correction to the upper neck to restore proper alignment and normal nerve flow to the ears. Costs of Vertigo Emergency Room Visits According to a study published in the July, 2013 issue of Academic Emergency Medicine about 4% of all emergency medical department costs, which equals to about $4,000,000,000 a year, are due to people suffering from vertigo. That study was conducted by Dr. Ali S. Saber Tehrani from John Hopkins University in Baltimore and a team of his colleagues. In 2011, 3.9 million people who suffered from vertigo or dizziness visited emergency rooms, and most of the costs went to diagnostic testing. That amounts to more than $1,000 per person who suffers from Vertigo or dizziness per visit to an emergency room. There are then the costs of medications, and doctors will use over 50 medications to try to control the person's attacks. Whiplash and Vertigo Of those people who suffer from vertigo or dizziness, 25% - 50% suffered from whiplash due to an accident in a vehicle. Their battles with this condition will often subside after a few days, but they may linger for up to several years after the accident. Now, whiplash can occur when a person is hit at only 5 MPH, which means that this injury to the upper neck vertebrae does not need to involve a vehicle. So while, 25% -50% of those visits to the emergency room may have been due to people suffering from Vertigo or Dizziness that started with a vehicular accident, many other sufferers sustained upper neck injuries due to whiplash that did not involve vehicles. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download are e-book below. Realigning the Spine
Whether or not that accident happened in a car or because you fell or were hit, if you suffered some sort of accident that caused you to sustain whiplash, and you now deal with vertigo or dizziness, you most likely incurred an upper neck injury. The top two bones in your neck are out of alignment, and the only way to reverse the effects of that misalignment is to realign them. Now, you can wait until it gets so bad that you need to go to the emergency room, probably more than once, and pay more than $1,000 per visit plus the cost of medication (You should know medical science hasn't yet invented a medication that can realign your upper neck vertebrae). Or you can seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. They will examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments and make any needed adjustments, so your body can begin to heal itself. Hollywood and Meniere's Disease No. The Hollywood stars are not immune to developing the same diseases and conditions that threaten the health of the rest of us. Kristin Chenoweth is one such person who deals with the reality of need to get through every day not knowing if she is going to suffer from another attack of Meniere's Disease or not. In fact, she Tweeted, "Oh menieres disease. I'd like to eliminate you." This condition she suffers from is one that affects the inner ear and can cause episodes of Vertigo, Tinnitus, and even hearing loss. A Battle for Health While the cause of her recent health battles is not known, it is thought that she may have suffered this damage to her inner ear when a lighting rig fell and hit her on the head at the set of The Good Wife in July of 2013. While her initial injuries consisted of a concussion, three cracked teeth, a fractured skull, and injuries to her neck, hip, and rib, she continue to suffer from more long-standing symptoms. Her battles with Meniere's disease could have possibly been the result of the head or neck traumas she suffered. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download are e-book below. No More Suffering?
Just as the stars are prone to the same accidents and diseases everyone else is prone to, the same care is also available to them. Those people under the bright lights don't want to suffer any more than you do. They're just actors, so they're better at hiding the pain when they're in front of the cameras. For Chenoweth and other sufferers of Ménière’s disease there is hope. Misalignments in the upper neck have been demonstrated to be a common underlying cause of Ménière’s disease. Ménière’s disease is believed to be a result in changes with the nervous system, blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid flow. When misalignments in the upper neck occur these are the 3 areas that are affected. Correcting misalignments in the upper neck that a been suffered due to head and neck injuries have been shown to be an effective strategy in dealing with Ménière’s disease and other symptoms. Your Body's Righting Reflex When there is a dysfunction in your ears, that affects your body's and your ears balancing systems. The end result is that a person whose ears do not work right will often experience Vertigo, Dizziness, Disequilibrium, or many other conditions that are caused by head and neck injuries. When the top two vertebrae in the neck, or the upper cervical spine, are out of alignment by as little as ¼ of a millimeter that causes the head to fall out of alignment with the body. That might not seem like it's that big of a deal, until you consider that a human head weighs 10-14 lbs. An Unequal Distribution of Weight When the weight of the head is unevenly distributed, the brain needs to make up for that unequal distribution. It initiated something called a Righting Reflex, which keeps a person's eyes and ears level with the horizon. The entire body compensates for this unequal distribution, and that unequal distribute of the body causes pressure on the nervous system. All of this begins when there is a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae. That misalignment affects the part of the brain called the brainstem, which extends down to the spinal cord. The upper neck has more pressure sensors than anywhere else in the body, and each one gives the brain and brainstem information. The brainstem then sends message to the ears via cranial nerves that affect a person's balance. All of this can be due to two small bones causing misalignments throughout the body and unequal distribution of weight. The result of these changes affecting the brainstem can be and often is vertigo, dizziness, and disequilibrium. To find out more about the connection between head and neck injuries and Ménière's disease download are e-book below. Realigning Your Spine
Now that you know the bad news, you are probably ready for some good news. That unequal distribution of weight throughout your body is reversible. The only thing that needs to happen is that those two small bones in your upper neck, also called your upper cervical spine, need to be realigned. Though, not every person who deals with vertigo, dizziness, or disequilibrium has suffered from a misalignment in their upper neck. That means it's important they seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, so they can examine your upper neck vertebrae. If they find any misalignments in those top two bones in their neck, they will make any necessary adjustments and set you on a plan to hold the correction as long as possible. Then, the body can begin to heal itself. Medicine has evolved in recent times to perform miracles when it comes to the most serious emergency trauma situations. However, what if you do not have an emergency trauma situation? What if you suffer from something worse, something that cannot be seen; only you can feel it with every passing breath? Medical practitioners, generally term such conditions as idiopathic – a condition without any known cause; hence, without an established treatment plan, and no known cure.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care - Alternative Medicine
If you suffer from Vertigo, it may be the result of another existing condition such as, Meniere’s disease or without any connection of other symptoms, in which case, it is known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). However, in both cases, it is confusion between the mind and body, leading to recurring dizziness, spinning sensations and loss of balance that keep getting worse. Even then, a medical practitioner will not be able to help you unless he sees proof of your condition in seemingly endless medical exams, to confirm your diagnosis. Even with a diagnosis what are your options in a medical setting? DRUGS or SURGERY. A colossal waste of time and money!
The Truth About Treatment - What You Should Know
This is when it is essential to defy the norms, rely on Alternative Medicine. One such branch of Alternative Medicine is Chiropractic Care, more specifically, Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care, which relates the condition of vertigo to spinal defects, and brings hope for long-term relief.
Vertigo alone, or associated with other dysfunctions such as Meniere’s disease, is not only caused by defects in the inner ear function. Instead, disequilibrium is most commonly cervical in origin. The cervical spine, therefore, has been established as the leading cause in regulating the body’s sense of equilibrium. However, to confirm if your state of vertigo is of cervical origin, you should take the initiative of taking the Hautant’s test before any physician prescribes it for you. This test measures the ability of the cervical spine to appropriately regulate the muscle tone in the extremities. How Can Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Help You?
The first neck bone or the first cervical spine is called C1. The unique position and shape of this bone provides a coupling mechanism between the head, neck, and lower spine. Most importantly, inside the top of the spine, closest to C1, lies the lower part of the brain stem and the beginning of the spinal cord as shown in Figure 2. Disturbance to C1, may lead to a change in its position, causing disruptions and in severe cases choking of the nerves communicating with the inner ear; hence, causing vertigo like symptoms.
The basis of the Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care in Alternative medicine is to re-adjust the cervical bone, to be able to release the pressure off the brain stem and spinal cord. By reducing this pressure, the transmission of nerve impulses, is no longer hindered, allowing the body to naturally reduce and eliminate vertigo symptoms by correcting the root cause. Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care might not be the first treatment you seek for your condition of Vertigo; however, it is the only hope to relieve you of your daily symptoms, by providing a clear communication path between your mind and body. If you suspect that you have a neck problem causing your vertigo or Meniere's symptoms please give us a call at (208) 559-0541 for a complimentary consultation or click the button below. |
